This is me your lazy blogger. Earlier this morning, I watched a movie entitle "Life of Pi" yes, Pi . That mathematical thing that equals to 3.142. I cant find the symbol anywhere on my laptop. But it was not a story about mathematical formulae. Its more than that. At first, I thought this story was a funny story. By the way Pi got his name. And how he was mocked to "Pissing" by his friends and even teachers. But then he learn about Pi and the very first day of his school day the next year he simply created his own nickname and explained it as Pi. At the end of the day, he became a hero. Pi grew up in a Zoo ran by his father with his mother and Ravi, his older brother. He was a Hindu. Whats the most interesting thing was how he convert into 3 religion at the same time.He met Christ when he was 12 then he say God come again and address him as Allah. From that day on, he pray 5 times a day as a Muslim, he prayed like a Christian before he eats and other things as a Hindu. (I LAUGHED SO HARD ON THIS ) His father mocked him as they were eating and told him to think rationally while his mother argue by saying that he is still young and will find his way one day. But Pi understands his father perspective and stick to Hindu religion.
And there was this Tiger that they called as "Richard Parker", He really liked the tiger that he went to feed the tiger. He brought his brother along but his brother knew it was dangerous and ended up calling his father. His father punished him by letting him witness Richard Parker ate a goat. He got traumatized and from there, he tasted his first life trial. Or as I would called it, "Moments of Loss". He started to live normally. School become bored and half of wonders of life was loss. He gave up on trying to find something that will brought him back to life. Until one day he found a girl named, "Anandi" He fall in love with her and they started dating. Or so I was to understand the story. But as his love bloomed, his father decided to closed the Zoo and sell the animal to the west and with the money they can start a new life in Canada. It was due to the fact that the ground was the governments that his father took a drastic action. He meet Anandi before he depart and remembered everything that happened on that day.
His heart hurt but after sometime he realized that everyone in their family was feeling the same way. One day, a storm came and hit their ship. He woke up and went out side to enjoy the storm . He even asked God to give him more rain and lightnings, not realizing the ship was sinking. Then he saw one of the crew getting washed away. He ran and tried to save his family but its too late. He was told to stay in the life boat when a Zebra jumped into the boat and released the boat to the sea. Then he saved an Orang Utan named "Orange Juice" and accidently saved Richard Parker. And a hyena that was hiding in the boat. In the end , the ship sink as he was looking at it from faraway. He said it so many times.
I'm gonna cut it short here about what happened next.
They hyena was hungry and ended up killing the Zebra. Pi was so mad and the hyena stopped but it was too late. After that, the hyena killed Orange Juice. Richard Parker appeared and killed the hyena but did not kill Pi. Well he almost did but he did not. It was just him and Richard Parker . That night, Pi cried as he sat on a raft made out of life jackets accompanied by Richard Parker on the life boat. The next day he read the survival book and did all he could so he and Richard Parker can survive.
I was amazed by the amount of courage he have here. If that was me I would be thinking that I'm not gonna make it and I'm going to die. Imagine in the middle of the sea it was you and a tiger on a boat. After that he build himself a raft so that he could stay away from the Tiger.
One night, as Pi was enjoying the view of the night sky and glowing sea, a whale suddenly showed up and hit the raft that he made where his food supply was. He lose all of the food supply. The next few day he become desperate. He stated this
"Hunger can change everything you knew about yourself".
They were starving. He climbed back to the life boat and Richard Parker appeared. He growl at him. Out of no where, a fish slam into Pi's face. A moment later, a swarm of flying fish swam across the boat and some ended up in the boat including a big fish that both of them fight for. Pi got the fish and ate it raw. I think when he states that he meant that in the most desperate moment, one become selfish and their survival instinct took over their rational thinking. In this case,hunger was the reason.
The next morning, he tried to train Richard Parker by using the fish and a stick. He succeed. As he was taking a rest on his raft, he was thinking and being thankful even with everything he have at the moment, including Richard Parker. He realized that without him, he would not be so alert and might have died. Feeding Richard Parker become his priority. He thank God for everything including the tools, knife and a little shade had on his raft. He never thought that even the simplest thing can became his greatest treasure.
A ship then appeared but did not see Pi. He keeps shooting the emergency flare gun. Until his last flare. He hold on to thought "Never lose hope" as the survival guide states,but deep inside him , he knows that he was already at the edge. That night he slept at the boat with Richard Parker. Everything comes into his mind again. From the day the ship sink.The only thing he had left was his words. He held on to his pencil and survival book but that too, was taken away by the storm. In the storm, he almost lose his mind , telling the scared Richard Parker to meet God , indicating that he was ready to die and taken away by God. He stated this "I lose my family!!! I lose everything!!! I surrender,what more do you want?! " The moment he saw Richard Parker's scared face,he says his apology. He covers the boat with the canvas until the storm was over. The raft was gone. With none of the water and food supply, he knew they were dying. But God's blessing comes to him when his boat landed on a strange Island. The island got food supply and fresh water. But as night came he realize that the Island was carnivorous.The pool that held fresh water gives out chemical that kills fish or anything near. The next morning, he restored his supplies and sailed back to the sea with Richard Parker.
"Even God seemed to abandoned me, he was watching. Even when he seemed indifferent to my suffering, he is watching. And when I was beyond all hope of saving, He gave rest. Then he gave me a sign to continue my journey"
In the end, he reaches Mexican shore and there, Richard Parker went straight ahead without even looking at him that was lying at the sand. He weep on his way to the hospital because of his separation with Richard Parker.
" I suppose in the end, life becomes an act of letting go. But what always hurt the most is not taking a moment to say goodbye"
He express his regret of not be able to thank his father for his lessons. The story continued with the Japanese shipping company send two man to talk to him. They did not believe him so he told them another story. He replaced the animals as humans and the story becomes tragic. The Zebra as the sailor, the hyena as the cook, his mother as Orang Utan and him as Richard Parker. At the end, he ask the person he told his story with this question. " Which story do you prefer?" And the man realizes that what Pi was telling him is that what God's decision and what he have stored for you was always the best. Therefore, always have faith in him.
In my opinion, this movie deserves 10/10 rating. I love the theme of this movie and how they applied a situation to every quote that we always crossed by on twitter, instagram and facebook. It shows how simple God's rule was and it was us humans whom always did not seem to understand. That no matter what he throws at you, no matter what life throws at you, you gotta believe him. He knows better, he always do. In the end, we ALWAYS come back to him.
